Caring for organic cotton percale is straightforward, as long as you know a few essential rules. Washed at the wrong temperature or dried on too high a heat, even a beautiful bed set can age prematurely whereas the right care routine allows it to last for years.
Thanks to its tight weave, cotton percale offers excellent everyday durability. Although it can withstand high temperatures, washing at moderate temperatures is always recommended to protect the fibres and extend the life of your bed linen. With the right care, percale retains all its comfort and elegance, wash after wash.
Is organic percale more delicate than conventional percale?
GOTS certification does not mean the fabric is less resistant. On the contrary, the durability of a bed set depends above all on fibre quality, weave density and the skill of the people who make it. With appropriate care, your bed linen will retain its qualities and comfort for many years to come.
Temperature, wash cycle and detergent: how to wash percale properly
Cotton percale is loved for its cool, crisp feel and its remarkable durability. A few simple habits are all it takes to preserve these qualities over time.

What temperature should you choose?
Although cotton percale can be washed at up to 95°C, a temperature of 30°C to 40°C is recommended for everyday care. This is generally sufficient to clean your bed linen effectively while preserving the fibres, colours and softness of the fabric.
For a more eco-conscious routine, a low-temperature wash with a good quality liquid detergent is also an excellent option.
The right wash cycle
Use a standard cotton programme and follow the care instructions on the label. Avoid overloading the drum so that the linen can move freely and wash evenly. It is also a good idea to wash all the pieces of a bed set together to maintain colour consistency over time.
Opt for a moderate spin speed (800 to 1,000 rpm). A spin that is too fast can stress the fibres and cause deep creases.
Which detergent should you use?
Choose a gentle liquid detergent, free from optical brightening agents and harsh enzymes.
Our washing tips
- Always separate whites from colours.
- Turn your bed linen inside out before washing.
- Treat stains promptly with a suitable product before putting the item in the machine.
- Follow the temperatures indicated on the care labels.
- Stick to a moderate spin speed.
Ironing percale: necessary or not?
Cotton percale is known for its structured, slightly crisp feel and that is part of its charm. It does have a tendency to crease, however. So should you iron it every time? It really depends on your preferences.
Reducing creases before you even reach for the iron
Air drying remains the ideal method for preserving fibre quality and reducing energy consumption. After washing, shake and smooth the damp linen before hanging it out to minimise creasing naturally.
If you use a tumble dryer, select a gentle programme and remove the linen while it is still slightly damp to prevent it from creasing too much.
If you do want to iron
Iron percale while it is still slightly damp. Steam is your best ally — it relaxes the fibres without damaging them.

| Tumble dryer | Normal programme |
How to keep white cotton sheets looking bright
Whitening percale without damaging the fibres is entirely possible. A few natural methods work particularly well.
Natural methods that genuinely work
Bicarbonate of soda added to the wash cycle acts as a softener and boosts the whitening effect of your detergent. One tablespoon is enough.
Sodium percarbonate (available from health shops or zero-waste stores) is a more powerful natural whitener, ideal for stubborn stains or yellowed linen. Use it as a pre-treatment or alongside your detergent, dissolved in lukewarm water at 40°C.

What to avoid
Bleach should never be used on organic cotton percale. It oxidises the fibres, weakens them and will eventually turn the fabric permanently yellow.
How long does quality percale last?
The lifespan of percale depends on two things: the initial quality of the fabric, and how consistently it is cared for. A low-quality bed set can deteriorate within one to two years even with careful washing. A superior percale, properly maintained, will last for many years.
At Kalani Home, our GOTS and Fairtrade certified organic cotton percale is woven from long-staple cotton, making it both highly durable and exceptionally soft. With gentle, regular care, it can retain its feel and brightness for at least 8 to 10 years.
Signs of wear to watch out for
The areas that experience the most friction around the feet and the middle of the sheet tend to show wear first. If the fabric starts to thin or fray in one area, it is time to replace it. A gradual softening of the fabric over time, however, is completely normal percale actually becomes softer and more supple with every wash.
Why do hotels choose percale? The reasons behind a professional choice
If you have ever stayed in a high-end hotel and noticed that clean, cool, slightly crisp feel of the sheets, there is a good chance you were sleeping on percale. This is no coincidence: in the hospitality industry, percale has been the benchmark fabric for decades.
Exceptional resistance to intensive washing
In hotels, linen is washed very frequently often several times a week and at high temperatures to meet professional hygiene standards. Percale, with its densely woven plain-weave structure, withstands repeated washing without losing its shape or firmness.
Kalani Home’s GOTS certified cotton percale can be washed at up to 95°C, making it compatible with the most demanding hygiene protocols whether for hotels, holiday lets or allergy sufferers who need high-temperature washing.

The flatwork ironer: a professional tool that percale handles perfectly
In commercial laundries, linen is passed through a flatwork ironer a heated roller under high pressure that smooths and finishes the fabric in seconds. Percale is ideally suited to this process: its tight, even weave emerges perfectly smooth, with that impeccable, hotel-quality finish.
Superior resistance to abrasion
Repeated friction from daily use, washing and movement during sleep gradually wears down the fibres of any fabric. Percale, thanks to its plain-weave structure and the length of its cotton fibres, stands up to this abrasion particularly well. This is a decisive quality when a sheet needs to be used hundreds of times.
At Kalani Home, this level of durability is just as accessible for home use a sensible initial investment in bed linen that truly lasts.

Ironing percale is not strictly necessary, but it does give a neater finish. To reduce creasing without ironing, remove the linen as soon as the cycle ends, shake it out firmly and hang it up immediately.
If you do iron, do so while the fabric is still slightly damp, at a medium temperature, on the reverse side. Over time, cotton percale becomes softer and progressively easier to iron.
To whiten percale naturally, use bicarbonate of soda or sodium percarbonate never bleach. One tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda in the detergent drawer boosts the whitening action of your detergent without harming the fibres. Sodium percarbonate is more powerful for stubborn stains dissolve it in lukewarm water at 40°C before applying.
