Do you want to renew your bed linen but are hesitating between several sizes? Not sure what size to choose for your duvet cover, pillowcases or fitted sheet? Don’t panic, here we explain how to measure your duvet, pillow and mattress, for a good night’s sleep and avoid unpleasant surprises when making your bed.
As explained in another article devoted to choosing the right duvet and duvet cover sizes (to be found here), knowing the recommended standards for the size of your bed is an essential first step. This new guide completes it by showing you, in a practical way, how to measure your duvet, pillow and mattress correctly. These simple steps will ensure a perfect fit between your bed linen and your bedding.
How do you measure your duvet and choose the right duvet cover?
Before choosing a new duvet cover, it’s essential to know the exact dimensions of your duvet. Good to know: the dimensions of a duvet are always expressed as width x length. The width is measured at the head(s) and the length at the foot(s).
To measure your duvet correctly:
· Lay it flat on the bed.
· Use a tape measure to measure the width from edge to edge (without pulling).
· Do the same for the length, from top to bottom.
For example, a duvet measuring 240 x 220 cm is 240 cm wide (head(s) side) and 220 cm long (head to toe).
Here are the standard duvet measurements:
· 140 x 200 cm: ideal for a single bed or cot.
· 200 x 200 cm: perfect for a standard double bed (140×200).
· 240 x 220 cm: recommended for king-size beds (160×200) or if you like to have more headroom.
· 260 x 240 cm: for large beds (Super King, 180×200 or 200×200) or for a “drop to the floor” effect.
If you are tall or move around a lot at night, don’t hesitate to choose a longer or wider duvet for greater comfort.
How do I measure my pillow?
Kalani offers two main standard pillow sizes: square (65×65 cm) and rectangular (50×70 cm).
To measure:
· Lay your pillow flat without puffing it up too much.
· Measure the width and length at the seam.
Kalani tip: choose pillowcases exactly the same size as your pillows. This ensures that the filling stays in place and that the pillow stays fluffy. A pillowcase that’s too large will give a floating effect, while one that’s too small could compress the pillow.
How do you measure your mattress?
We sometimes forget that fitted sheets need to be perfectly adapted to the size of our mattress – and in particular its height!
Things to consider:
· Width: 90, 140, 160, 180 or 200 cm depending on the type of bed.
· Length: 190, 200, sometimes 210 or 220 cm.
· Height (or thickness): between 30 and 40 cm depending on the mattress (standard, memory foam, spring, etc.).
To measure it:
· Use a tape measure to measure the three dimensions: width, length and height.
For example: your mattress is 160x200x30 cm, so choose a fitted sheet 160×200 cm with a 30 cm cover.
What’s next?
Once you’ve decided on the dimensions, all you have to do is choose the fabric that suits you (sateen, percale, jersey…), the colour that will match your decor, and the softness that will make you melt under the duvet.
