You’ve pulled your sweaters out of the closet, mornings are a little chilly, and yet you’re still sleeping under your summer duvet, telling yourself “it’ll be fine until Christmas.” Then one night around 3 a.m., you wake up shivering, knees pulled up to your stomach. Sound familiar?s are made and how they feel: cotton gauze is light, airy and textured, while cotton jersey is soft, flexible and even warmer to the touch.

Switching to the right duvet at the right time really changes how well you sleep. Here’s how to know when to do it, without guessing.

In short: switch to a tempered warm duvet as soon as nighttime temperatures drop below about 15 °C outside, or your bedroom falls below 16 °C. In Belgium and France, this most often happens between late September and mid-October. Another reliable sign: you feel cold in the early morning or you add a throw. An ideal bedroom for sleeping sits around 16 to 18 °C.

Why your choice of duvet changes the quality of your sleep

To fall asleep, our body needs to lower its internal temperature slightly. That’s why it’s easier to fall asleep in a cool room than in an overheated one. But once you’re asleep, you shouldn’t be cold either: cold causes micro-awakenings you don’t even remember, but which make the night less restorative.

A duvet therefore has a double role: keeping you warm without making you sweat, and wicking away the moisture your body releases during the night. A duvet that’s too light in winter, or too warm in summer, throws all of this off balance.

What are the signs it’s time to switch to a tempered warm duvet?

Rather than a date on the calendar, trust your body and your bedroom.
